  Triumph at Dunmore Community School

- Joan MacDonnell (Musical Director of Dunmore Church Choir)

A truly magnificent performance of  "Thank You For The Music’’ was presented by the students of D.C.S on the weekend of Nov. 5th 2010. High energy dancing, superb singing and wonderful acting were the hallmarks of this great show.

From the moving opening number ‘I Have A Dream’ Sky, (played by Edwina Mullins) held her audience captive and was superb throughout the show.

Her bridesmaids Carrie (Kate Macdonnell) and Lola (Maeve Regan) brought a beautiful stage presence and showed terrific talent in both singing and dancing.

The arrival of the ‘backing band’ Riba (Elaine McCaffrey) and Joanna (Nicola O’Donnell) was one of the funniest scenes in the show. Marvellous acting from Elaine and the wonderful singing voice of Nicola were sustained from beginning to end. The audience were in howls of laughter every time the two appeared! Acting was superb from both of  these girls and Elaine’s ‘If You Change Your Mind’ had the audience in peels of laughter! Wonderful performances from both girls!

The very difficult role of Danni was played by Hannah O’Loughlin who was superb throughout. Her fantastic singing and acting was a constant thread during the shoe.

Cliff (Brad Anderson) was a wonderful singer and acted with great confidence and on-stage movement. He was super!

Mack (Alan Tierney), Sharkey (Alfredo Hernandez) and Randy (Mark Ronayne) had fantastic stage presence and brought great humour and fun every time they stepped on stage. Great performances from these three.

One of the strongest performances of the night was rendered by the entirely believable Priest (Ruairi Silke). He held the audience captive and delivered lines with almost professional timing .

Lex (Aisling Glynn) also delivered a very strong performance and caused great audience reaction each time she appeared.

The three possible ‘Dads’ David, (James Mullarkey) Ethan, (David Kelly) and Jack, (Dara Walsh) were superb in their various roles. David Kelly was full of drama and sang wonderfully well. James Mullarkey’s acting was terrific and the introduction of his alternative family was hilarious. The wonderful singing voice of Dara Walsh was one of the highlights of the show. Fabulous performances from all three and definitely ones to watch  in future years!

The arrival of Elton, (Paul Clesham) brought the house down! He was amazing! His professional piano playing combined with a wonderful singing voice brought the most rapturous applause of the night.

Choruses sang and danced with marvellous energy and clearly displayed the joy which can only be experienced within a school musical. The ‘flipper’ dance will be long remembered and it is a great tribute to the school to see so many young men dancing and singing on stage.

Choreographer Daniel Moggan is highly accomplished and his skill and expertise were written all over the show.

The magnificent hall was created by Liam Feeney who also did sound and lighting with terrific professionalism. The sandcastles at the entrance transported us to sunny Greece and created the setting for the evening.

The show in its entirety however, is a marvellous tribute to Annette Walsh (Musical Director) and Catherine Geraghty (Producer). This highly dedicated production team brought a wonderful expertise and professionalism which was evident throughout the show. Under the musical direction of Annette Walsh the band were superb – lively, rhythmical and atmospheric at all times.

As a producer Catherine Geraghty goes from strength to strength and continues to ‘wow’ audiences with her terrific direction. Both teachers can be rightly proud of their wonderful production.

In fact, all teachers in D.C.S should be basking in the limelight after such a magnificent achievement. The show is testament to a strong school spirit of collaborative teamwork and endless extra hours of dedication. Congratulations and well done to one and all!
